Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 23, 2023

Sister Margaret Meaney, OSB shares a reflection on the scripture readings: Wisdom 12:13, 16-19; Romans 8:26-27; Matthew 13:24-30

I have been with this Gospel passage for a long time and find that something seemingly simple isn’t.

There is an obviousness about the word ‘seed’ and ‘scattering seed’ and what they represent, but there is also an unfocused-ness; all I can say is: follow what Jesus asks of us.

“Love one another.”

“Be merciful.”

“Be just.”

There are no seeds as dreadful as the seeds of ignorance and want. Especially ignorance.

A mere puff of hot air spreads them.

The seeds of mercy and gentleness are quiet, active.

Different types of people are not weeds; they are genetic diversity. Bad acts are weeds.

A dandelion is only a weed if it grows where it is not wanted.

Let us have a different kind of want; let us want dandelions!

God bless us all.
