Reflection written by Sr. Clare Carr, O.S.B.

Jesus’ baptism is an inauguration into his new ministry. His is anointed with water and fire and is blessed with these words, “You are my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.”

We have just begun a new year. The coming year is filled with possibilities and uncertainties. There is so much going on in our world that creates a sense of peril, confusion and suffering. At times, I can feel overwhelmed with all the world events and concerns, as well as my personal issues. During these times, I might wonder, “How can I go on? Where is the hope? Who me, Lord? What do you want? Am I enough for all that is being asked?” Then I remember that I cannot do it without Him. In all my uncertainty and confusion, I hear Him say to me, “You are my beloved. I am pleased with every effort you make to be your authentic self in this world. It is not the results; it is the willingness.”

May we each take comfort in the words: “You are my beloved, in whom I am well pleased.” And may we also recognize this is God blessing us during this time in history and for the New Year 2013!
